7 Things You Need to Know About Hosting
What is Hosting?
A web site sits on a special computer called a "server" the computer serves up the information to people wanting to see it on the web (Internet)
that is termed "hosting".
Your goal is to have ALL your web site visitors see your site quickly and all the time!
1.
Beware the server stuck in a BACK ROOM somewhere or "Right here near me" - they may not be high quality and not have high powered, fast lines into and out of it.
2.
Beware no one watching over this computer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week what happens if there is a fire, it overheats, or something else happens and they aren't there?
3. Beware the climate and back up systems
make sure there is a backup generator, that the room and even the building is specially built and designed for servers. Ask about fire SAFETY and other types of safety measures they have in place.
4. Beware price extremes
FREE or VERY LOW monthly can mean that your host will soon be out of business. On the other extreme, just because a company charges something like 80.00/mo doesn't mean it's the best.
5. Beware the reseller
these are people or companies who rent a small portion of some other company's server and then RESELL that space make sure they have control and knowledge of that actual computer and MAKE sure they don't pack it so full that it's hard to get to your web site.
6. Beware low speed lines or no back up lines
look
for something called "OC lines" and the bigger the number, the better it may be for you.
Make sure they have something called "REDUNDANT" back up in other words, MORE THAN ONE back up line Look for OC48-OC 192 for hosting.
7. Beware the lack of being on a main Internet HUB
that is, a place in the USA for the INTERNET that all the main connections hook up to ask if they are on the backbone of the INTERNET that's right the BACKBONE that means they are close to ATT, SPRINT, SWB and all the big ones ask which CITY it is in!
All in All
hosting also takes care of e-mail and other necessary but behind the scenes functions for your web site CRITICAL functions thus, the cheapest is not usually reliable, but the most expensive is not
necessary the best.
