lyrics years ago: "All the gold in California is sittin' in a bank in Beverly Hills in somebody else's name."
And that's true with the Internet. There may be a few millionaires yet to be made out there, but if you're selling siding in Seattle, then "It ain't you babe."
And we're not going to try to sell you on the fantasy that you will get filthy rich with your own Web Site. But a good Web Site can help a good businessman make a good business even better.

Thousands of new customers will not swarm to your Web Site.

The Internet offers small businesses the
opportunity to reach new customers, but these new customers have to have a reason to find you. And if they're looking for siding companies in Seat tle, they're not going to go to the Internet to find them. They'll go to
the Yellow Pages. Or the local "Bargain Hunter" type publication.
But customers and potential customers
will come to your site. And, if you design it correctly, they will do business with you.
If they are looking for something, say - Home
Improvement items, they will visit a Web Site specializing in home improvement information. And if you can advertise on that site, you
can get some new customers.
(Now, don't get us wrong here. If you are selling a product that people are buying, or will
buy, over the Internet, keep reading. There are ways to get thousands of new customers.)

Geeks don't always make good businessmen and women.
|

 And if you want the Whole Trut...er...Wheat, the real
problem is that most ISP's and Web Site hosting companies are operated by computer people, not businessmen. Computer geeks are handy when your
modems needs to be reconfigured. But they're rarely handy at selling siding.
(OK, Bill Gates is an exception. But he's in a category
all by himself.)
